You Are My Hiding Place

SONG WRITER: Michael Ledner

HYMN HISTORY: The author, Michael Ledner, composed "You Are My Hiding Place" at the age of 27 when he was going through a painful period in his life, a period of separation from his wife. He shared the song with several friends, made a recording of it, and set it aside. Nine months later he shared the song with a group while they were serving at a kibbutz (communal settlement) in Israel. These friends took the song back with them to California, and after it was sung there, Michael was contacted by Maranantha! Music who wished to record "You Are My Hiding Place."

BIBLE VERSES:

"You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance." -- Psalm 32:7 (NIV)

"When I am afraid, I will trust in you." -- Psalm 56:3 (NIV)

"But he said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, I am strong." -- 2 Corinthians 12:9-10 (NIV)

HYMN LYRICS:

You are my hiding place
You always fill my heart with songs
of deliverance
Whenever I am afraid
I will trust in You

I will trust in You
Let the weak say
I am strong
In the strength of the Lord

You are my hiding place
You always fill my heart with songs
of deliverance
Whenever I am afraid
I will trust in You

I will trust in You
Let the weak say I am strong
In the strength of the Lord
I will trust in You

    1. Michael Ledner was born in 1952. and he wrote the song in 1980., at the age of 27.
Phantom of the opera was written and published and performed around 5-6 years later.
In 2012. Train made a song with the same notes, 50 ways to say goodbye.

  3. Three of the lines (You are my hiding place, you always fill my heart, with songs of deliverance) are almost identical in tune and cadence to some of David Lanz's "Nocturne." Wonder which came first.

  4. "You Are My Hiding Place," 1980-ish
    "Phantom of the Opera," 1986
    "Nocturne," 1991

    Could all be coincidence.

  5. I always thought this song had a relation with Corrie Ten Boom. I guess not, but it's still inspirational.

    1. "his marriage finally and permanently dissolved" ... "It was his renewal moment, and his life progressed positively after that. Many years later, he’d become a pastor and was married again, feeling as though he’d learned a valuable lesson from the day he sat in a small room with his guitar, bible, and feelings he didn’t want at the time." http://songscoops.blogspot.com/2013/11/you-are-my-hiding-place-michael-ledner.html

  14. When my 26 year old daughter was dying of cancer, we sang this song in the night many times to plow through the pain and fear that came with the awful disease. I'm writing her story and wonder if it's alright to quote it in the book I'm writing. How do I get permission from the author. The Hiding Place story was a resource to help me forgive people who hurt us deeply in the during the six years she suffered.

  19. I first heard this song in 1985. My Biola college classmates were singing this song along with a guitar at the beach with a fire. It was beautiful. It took my breath away. Then at Christmas 1985, I created my own piano arrangement of this beautiful song. The melody has always ministered to me during difficult times. Thank you for writing this song, Michael.

  20. Gorgeous song. I love playing this song on the piano. The melody is moving but when you add the lyrics it goes to another level of beauty. "I will trust in you" A total surrender to know God will be there no matter what your facing. I just had to read the story of how the song was written. Behind most moving songs is a story of birth pain. Thank you Michael for letting the Holy Spirit use you to speak to millions through your pain. I picture when I sing this hiding under the shadow of the most high God. He's got this in my life. Blessings, Sherron'
